FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What do we need to do to sign up for Orchestra?
A: Select Orchestra as your Number 1 Choice on your Course Selection page or online. All students who select Orchestra will get into the class, there is no course limit! This is all you need to do for now!
Q: Do I need to have prior musical experience to be apart of orchestra?
A: No. Students will learn how to play the string instrument of their choice as well as learn how to read music.
Q: Am I able to participate in orchestra and athletics as well as other Fine Arts?
A: Of course! We have many student athletes in our program. The directors work very closely with the coaching staff to make sure the kids get to participate in all activities. It is NOT required for you to take Pre-Athletics in 6th Grade to be eligible for Athletics in 7th Grade. :)
If you opt to take 2 Fine Arts in 6th Grade, you can choose to do this; however right now district & state course requirements will only make it possible in 6th & 7th grade; in 8th Grade most students have a required course which would take the spot of one Fine Arts credit.
Q: How many events (outside of school) are required for first year students per year?
A: Beginning Orchestra members participate in four concerts per year (about 1 concert per nine weeks, depending on the calendar). 3 of those concerts are on campus at LCI!
We also have many optional events like socials and field trips that students can choose to participate in outside of class if desired.
Q: Do I need to buy an instrument or should I rent?
A: Rent! Your child is still growing and maturing and renting will give you child the flexibility to exchange to larger size instrument in necessary. The instrument can be returned to the company at any time without further obligation. All rental payments will apply towards purchase.
Q: What about if our family needs financial assistance?
A: CCISD CARES is allows the directors to offer discounted or free instrument rentals from the school. Please ask the directors if you need assistance! Everyone who is interested in playing an instrument can play with us!
Q: Are private lessons required?
A: Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students, but are not required. If your child takes private lessons, they will receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician (many of which have graduate degrees).
